Slate roofs are known to hold up under winter weather conditions but ice dams can form and cause damage to your roof.
Our St. Louis winter weather is off to a cold and snowy start. We average 15 inches of snow per year. Even though this is only about half the U.S. average, our winter weather can cause issues for our homes, in particular our roofs.
Slate Roof – Ice Dams
Slate roofs are renowned for performing well under winter weather conditions. However, one problem that occasional arises is ice damming. Ice dams form when snow and rain collect and then freeze along the eaves of a roof and build up ice. This can worsen by poorly insulated roofs that allow warm inner air to melt the snow off the roof from the inside. When this happens, the water runs down the roof and hits the cold eaves and then freezes again. This newly formed ice is trapped and is not able to drain. Depending on weather conditions, the ice build-up can be extreme. It is almost impossible to prevent a leak in the roof when these conditions occur.
How to Protect Your Roof
The first thing is to make sure your roof is well-insulated. This may not completely solve the problem, especially if we get a serious ice storm, but it will definitely help.
The second thing is to have over-sized bib flashings installed under the joints between each pair of slates along the eaves of the roof. This is simply a flat piece of sheet metal, it can be copper, aluminum, or coated stainless steel. A simple inspection by a contractor can be done to determine the length that is needed. The bib fortifies the slates and will cover the defects in the slates that are allowing water to enter and lead to ice dams.
In addition to having the issue repaired, once it’s become a problem, it’s important to have an inspection done of your roof by a professional before serious weather occurs. If there are broken or cracked slate tiles, issues can definitely arise when bad winter weather arrives. Slate roofing repairs can easily be done by our roofing specialists at Duration Construction.
