The most often used single ply roofing membrane in the United States, TPO roofing is coveted by commercial and industrial building owners who are looking to gain LEED credits for their projects.
Why Choose TPO Roofing For Your St. Louis Commercial Building?
One of the fastest growing commercial roofing systems in the industry, TPO is a single ply roofing membrane that provides outstanding protection for the buildings it covers while providing extraordinary energy efficiency.
There is an increased demand for roofing solutions that are able to reflect heat and provide superior energy efficiency. TPO roofing is able to deliver on both of these benefits as a single ply membrane resistant to ultraviolet sun rays, chemical exposure, and ozone exposure. Duration Construction is proud to have gained expertise in this superior product and see it as a feasible roofing option for commercial and industrial buildings and structures.
What is TPO?
First introduced less than 20 years ago, TPO has quickly become the primary commercial roofing choice for builders, architects, and roofers. Not only does it provide a superior green solution for roofing, but it is also 100% recyclable without any type of chemical byproduct.
Technically known as flexible thermo polyolefin, TPO is a thermoplastic roofing product without the addition of plasticizers. It closely resembles other thermoplastics, but the chemical characteristics differ greatly. Designed specifically to address common issues with thermoplastics, TPO has similar characteristics to rubber except with better seam puncture and tear strength.
Depending on the roof of your commercial building and its specific needs, TPO roofing can be ballasted, mechanically fastened, or fully adhered to the surface. The seam strength is unprecedented in commercial roofing and will provide your building with the ultimate protection from the elements.
TPO comes in large sheets of up to 12 feet to cover the roof, which is then welded together. The bond formed by hot air welding is stronger than that of the material, giving the building a seamless roof surface that does not allow for water to penetrate to the sub-structure. This same hot air welding is used around any flashing details, including vent covers, and pipes. The larger sized sheets of TPO make installation faster and easier, reducing the cost of installation for a St. Louis commercial building owner.
Frequently Asked Questions About TPO
Although gaining popularity rapidly, many of our commercial clients have not yet heard of TPO and its broad range of commercial roofing benefits. We have addressed many questions about the roofing product, its sustainability, and installation and here we share those questions most often posed to us:
What types of commercial buildings benefit from TPO single-ply roofing products?
TPO single ply is suitable in an array of commercial and industrial buildings with a low slope or flat roof.
What does the term reflectively mean?
Reflectivity in roofing is a reference to the roofing materials ability to bounce ultraviolet rays off of the surface. White TPO is highly effective at this and has now been awarded an ENERGY STAR rating thanks to its ability to keep a commercial building cooler during hot weather season.
What does LEED mean?
LEED, Leadership in Energy & Environment Design is a certification program for green buildings, especially in the commercial and industrial industry. Buildings can be certified based on the positive environmental impact they have. The addition of TPO roofing is a LEED achievement and will earn you points towards certification.
Will the TPO sheet cover my air vents?
No, air vents and pipes are critical to your buildings air circulation and HVAC system. During installation, we use specialized accessories around all vents and pipes to ensure that they remain unobstructed and do not pose a risk for water infiltration.
Will I need to add support to my roof before TPO can be installed?
No, single ply TPO is extremely lightweight and will not typically need any extra support from the existing roof structure.
Am I able to have a TPO single-ply membrane installed over my old asphalt roof?
No, you would have to first have a wooden board installed if you don’t want to pull the old roofing material off.
